Every competitor should read the rules and logistical considerations detailed on this page prior to the event to assure his/her understanding of the format of the race and his/her responsibilities. The organization will review these rules in the technical meeting the day before the event and will NOT permit any exceptions, particularly any lack of preparation on the part of the competitors with any of the details provided here.

Any questions or doubts: info@lavueltaalhuascaran.com

FOOD/HYDRATION/CONTROL STATIONS:

The organization will have control stations in as many as 5 pre-defined points of control during each day (depending upon category). These points will have limited food and hydration, first aid supplies, shelter, and in some cases satellite communication, oxygen and vehicles to help assist in an evacuation.  Race staff will also be controlling cyclists race-time at these points.  In the event of an injury or for those who wish to discontinue the stage for the day, racers should endeavor to make it to one of these points where they can await medical assistance or for the sweep vehicle to take them to end of the stage.

ACCOMPANYING PERSONS:

Accompanying persons and vehicles will be pre-registered with their corresponding racers during the orientation meeting the day before the event start. Accompanying vehicles will depart before the race start at the hour defined by the organization each day and are not permitted to assist riders at any point along the route.  This includes passing a rider food or clothing, receiving anything from them, or assisting with repairs or technical problems en-route.  Accompanying persons and vehicles whom are found to intervene with riders will cause a time penalty for their team of +1 hour of the last rider to arrive for that day. All accompanying persons will be responsible for their own provisions, all necessary camping equipment, as well as their vehicle safety and security. There is an option to purchase a food package and be included in all meals provided to the racers at the camp.

MECHANICAL ASSISTANCE:

Riders are not allowed to receive mechanical assistance along the route by accompanying persons or other people not participating in the event, in the case of this occurring the team will be penalized. Each team is responsible for solving their own technical problems en-route and to carry with them the appropriate tools and replacement parts that they consider necessary. The organization will provide a list of logistical equipment that is obligatory and each rider will be subject to inspection of this material at the start of each stage. In the event that a rider is found without the mandatory equipment their team will receive a time penalty for the day.

The organization will provide basic mechanical assistance with the sweep car which will follow behind the final rider of the stage, however, teams who wait for assistance from the sweep car are still subject to the time limits for each day.

In the camp there will be a mechanical service tent with staff to help with any bicycle problems or repairs and basic parts available for purchase.

MEDICAL ASSISTANCE & ACCIDENT INSURANCE:

The organization will provide basic medical assistance at the control stations along the route.

An emergency medical tent staffed by a medical technician for the treatment of injuries and/or illness will be installed at the camp.. There will also be ambulances strategically positioned throughout the race.  A personal medical insurance policy is recommended for each participant; the organization will cover the initial expenses of evacuation and treatment as necessary, however, all of these costs will be reimbursed by the person in question once the situation has been stabilized.

TIME LIMITS:

Participants must complete each race section (divided by the control stations) in the determined time limits each day. For safety and security reasons, riders whom do not pass the control points within these time limits will not be permitted to continue the race and will need to take the sweep vehicle to the next control point – if reached within the time limit – or to the race end.

Any rider who transports in the sweep vehicle will receive a time penalty of +1 hour more than the time of the final competitor to arrive that day.

CAMPSITE:

The campsite will be for the competitors, registered accompanying persons and all of the workers & volunteers of the organization.

The camp services include:

  • A sheltered dining area with comfortable tables and chairs, illumination and a sound system.  Each competitor will have a food bracelet which the camp staff will mark at the start of each meal to control the distribution of meals.  Accompanying persons will not be included in the food unless they have previously arranged a meal plan for themselves (this can be done at the moment of inscription or up until the week before the event start). Anyone without a meal plan – and bracelet – will be responsible for their own food needs, cooking and cleaning.
  • A specified tent area for camping.  Participants who have purchased the Logistical “Camp Package” will find their tents set up for them upon arrival, outfitted with sleeping bags and mattresses.  They will not have to disassemble their tent the morning of day two.  All other participants are responsable to set up and disassemble their tent and leave their camp site free of trash and any other material.
  • A medical tent with a registered medical technician and emergency medical supplies to assist in injuries or illness while at camp.
  • Massage tents with massage tables and certified therapists offering by-the-minute massage services at an additional fee
  • Bathroom tents with dry and chemical toilets, toilet paper provided
  • A bicycle mechanical area with technicians to help with any maintenance or repairs.  They will have a limited supply of replacement parts for sale and offer wash and lube services as well as other basic maintenance jobs for an additional fee

All trash generated at camp should be put in the bins provided before the race start on the 2nd day.

The camp will NOT have electrical outlets for competitors to charge their devices, we recommend an external battery in order to recharge gps and telephones for the following day.  There is NOT cell coverage for most of the race route and there is NO CELL SERVICE at the camp.  The organization will have satellite telephones and In Reach devices for any emergency situation requiring communication.

COMPETITORS CAMPING EQUIPMENT:

Each participant will need to turn in their camping material (anything they do not wish to carry with them on their bikes) in one duffle bag in the indicated place during the technical meeting the day prior to the race and 30 minutes before the race start on the second day in order to have their equipment transferred to the campsite day one and the arrival/finish line day two. Those who have accompanying persons with personal vehicles can have their material transported either by the organization or in their private vehicles.

Duffle bags or backpacks must be marked with the team number provided by the organization at the time that competitor kits are handed out. The duffle should be well closed to avoid any problems during transit; the organization is not responsible for possible damage or losses of equipment due to improper packing. The weather & temperatures of the campground can vary quite a lot at this time of year, we recommend each competitor be prepared with appropriate warm and water-proof clothing.

FOOD AND HYDRATION STATIONS DURING THE RACE:

Each competitor is responsible for carrying sufficient liquids and energy foods that they will require for the race. Stages can last as long as 10 hours.

The organization will provide complementary hydration and food at the control stations but we do not guarantee supplies for everyone. Participants will have the opportunity to leave personal resupplies at one pre-defined station per day in order to replenish their personal supplies. The organization will provide the water necessary to all cyclists for the 2nd day of the race at the campsite.
